Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui for a Yoga Teacher

Feng Shui for a Yoga Teacher.jpg

I’d love any feng shui advice you can give me. I’m a yoga teacher - it’s what I love. I would like to grow my annual income by doubling the amount of private clients I work with regularly. I’m exhausted with the myth that it’s impossible to make money as a yoga teacher!

Hunt P., Brooklyn, NY

Hi Hunt,

What a blessing that you love your career and what you do. And yes, it is possible to make good money as a yoga teacher; I believe in you! And a little feng shui always helps, right? 🙂

Thank you for sending along your floor plan. I’ll make some basic comments on the entire plan, then focus on your bedroom. The bedroom represents you and is the best place to focus your energy.

It’s really important to have a clean entry with a bright light. If there isn’t an ability to keep the entry area bright and as expansive as possible, do what you can. You can add lighting, use brighter bulbs, paint the area white. From your floor plan, it looks rather narrow, so it could also benefit from having a mirror on the wall, to visually and energetically open up the space. Also make sure that, since this is an apartment, the apartment door number is easy to find and clean. You can also make sure all buzzers and door bells are in working order. Since the entry is your Path in Life and Career area, this is especially important.

Let’s move onto your bedroom area. We can echo what we are doing in your overall floor plan by activating the Path in Life area of your bedroom. Mimic what was done in the entry of the whole floor plan. For example, you can add a new light fixture and/or mirror in both of these areas. Or paint the entry of the apartment and the wall along the door wall of the bedroom white. Or do all three!

The bed is not in the ideal position, but I understand you have a window and closet that makes it difficult to relocate it. What you can do to put the bed in the commanding position is to place a mirror so that when you’re in bed you can easily see the front door.  Second, your body is in the line of qi from the door. This can cause health problems. This can be corrected by hanging a Feng Shui crystal in the line of qi, where I’ve notated it on the floor plan. You can purchase a feng shui crystal here, in the Holistic Spaces shop.

Finally my last comment is to move your desk in command as suggested on the floor plan. You’re not in command with your current desk position. Your desk represents your career, so its location is super critical. Also, in the Recognition areas of your desk, bedroom and apartment, you can place a piece of citrine; see the circles noted on the floor plans. This will activate your prosperity energy and your fire energy in the world, so all the potential clients out there who can benefit from your services can find you!

Q&A Sunday: What To Do When Feeling Stuck in Your Life

What To Do When Feeling Stuck In Your Life.jpg

I spoke to you back in the summer and I fixed my lamp and got a job. Any more I can do to declutter my home? Where can I look to free the space more? I'm 25 and still feel so stuck. I'm a bit worried. How do I make more money and unstick my life? Can you give me another suggestion?

Stella I., Forest Hills, NY

Dear Stella,

Thank you for your email and question. That’s wonderful that you incorporated some of the suggestions we spoke about, including fixing your lamp. And congratulations on the job! Amazing!!!

Although you have seen some progress, you’re indicating that you still feel stuck, worried, you want to make more money, and you want to free up space. These are very human and real problems that I think every person is facing in their lives. Without knowing more than what you’ve written in this email, my first thought is to suggest that you work on your self-cultivation

There are many factors in life, which Professor Lin Yun (founder of BTB feng shui) called the “Art of Living”. You can read more about this in my teacher’s book “The Modern Book of Feng Shui” by Steven Post.

  • Fate or destiny, which is what we were born with, like our astrology

  • Karma, the sum of your actions, cause and effect, what we did and what we do

  • Feng shui, or your physical and energetic environment

  • Luck, which we can adjust with feng shui and karma

  • Education, what you do with yourself while you’re here

Again, with not much to go on, my best advice is to work on your self-knowledge and educate yourself in spiritual matters. This may mean to work with training your mind. All of these factors in life affect us, and de-cluttering your home or more money may create some relief, but it sounds like your discomfort is much deeper.

I recently attended a workshop about journaling. My friend Katie Dalebout walked us through the values of journaling, which she also outlines in her book, Let It Out! Katie was so inspiring that I purchased some legal pads that evening! And I've been journaling every morning since. This practice might be helpful for you to look at your life and see yourself with clarity. For a feng shui twist, you can sit in the Self-knowledge or New Beginnings area of your bedroom or home to give yourself some extra umph! Here's a blog post where I interview Katie about journaling.

Maybe this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but I sensed you want a quick fix, a magic pill, and I challenge you to dive into your stuckness and worry, and see what is underneath. Yes, feng shui can truly help with this, but you can also go deeper and look inside of you!

Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui for Toilets and Drains

If water represents wealth, and closing the toilet seat helps to moderate the loss of money, what about sink and shower drains?

Leanne D, Lindale, TX

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for your question! Bathrooms are a bit of a concern in feng shui, because the water (and soiled water) flows in and out of this space. You are smart to ask about sink and shower drains. The entire bathroom is a concern, because there are additional drains besides the toilet. The toilet is usually of the most concern, because of the waste, but yes, the other drains also affect your feng shui.

There are many cures for the bathroom, which help to mitigate any energy loss, especially if the bathroom is in an inauspicious area. It really depends on your floor plan, your specific issues, and the inspiration of the practitioner. There are many many many feng shui adjustments that are not shared except in consultations. You receive them as needed when you work with a practitioner. It's kind of like how you should see a doctor rather than review WebMD for medical advice.

But in general, I would suggest you look at the bathroom area as a whole room and leave the nuances regarding the drains to the experts. You obviously can't close the drains of the sink and shower, but you can keep the door to the bathroom shut. If you work with a practitioner, they can also see if the bathroom is located in an area of concern (in relationship to the feng shui bagua map). For instance, you may want to adjust if the bathroom is in the Fame area, because it may dowse the fire energy related to your reputation and how the world sees you!

Great question and thank you for asking!

5 Ways to Attract Wealth with Feng Shui

featured this week on elephant journal

Feng shui is the Chinese art of placement, but it’s more than just moving furniture around. It’s a deeply contemplative philosophy and way of life.

Everything in the spaces around us holds energy that influences us. By far the most popular topic in feng shui tends to be, “How does one attract more abundance?”

Below are five feng shui tips to enhance wealth using feng shui techniques:

1. Bring Water into the Home.

People often get very excited about adding a fountain to their homes for feng shui. Water fountains have a soothing sound and can be very calming. In feng shui philosophy, water represents the flow of wealth, therefore a fountain can attract this energy. A fountain is best placed near the entry of a home. We should aim to have the water moving directionally towards the center of the space, rather than back out the door.
