Space Clearing with Palo Santo

Lately, my favorite method of space clearing has been smudging with palo santo. While we traditionally use orange essential oil in feng shui for space clearing, I love the smell of palo santo. It is especially useful on an everyday basis to refresh your home if you've had guests.

While white sage is the most commonly used substance for smudging, or clearing a room of negative energy, there are also a significant number of people who choose to instead use palo santo wood, or “holy wood/stick.” Palo santo is derived from specific trees found in the South American rainforests of Galapagos Islands, Ecuador and Peru and has been used for most of known history for a variety of healing including medicines, native ceremonies and, especially in Incan culture, spiritual clearing of a space, crowd or person. In addition to its ancient uses as a purifying agent, palo santo wood also harbors a better smell than sage and can be used in place of it as a matter of preference or to avoid allergies.

For the most part, using palo santo wood for space clearing follows the exact same steps as using sage. As with sage, the wood should be ignited then gently blown down to an ember to allow for spreading smoke around the room. Guidance of smoke to different areas of the room including corners, inside closets and in each direction of the compass is important. Also, be sure to allow the wood to produce enough smoke to fill the air. Though palo santo wood and sage are the same in regards to meaning behind smudges and ability of use in this situation, there are some perks to palo santo wood that sage does not share.

It is important to ensure you have a fire-proof container for resting the palo santo as well as extinguishing the flame once your smudging practice is complete. Many cultures who use palo santo or sage for smudging choose to use an abalone shell, which symbolizes the presence of water, thereby balancing the remaining elements of air, fire and earth. By the same element system, however, other cultures feel that involving the water element in this practice cancels out the effectiveness of the element of fire. As this is not an original feng shui practice, either is acceptable for your practice. Just be sure that whatever tool you use is not flammable and will withstand the heat of burning palo santo and ashes.

The most obvious difference between palo santo wood and sage is the smell. Many people find the smell of sage less than pleasant, but palo santo provides an aromatic, often desirable smell. In addition, the smoke produced from burning palo santo can actually be used to ward off mosquitos and other insects (aren’t they really the source of negative energy anyway?!). Perhaps one of the most useful differences between sage and palo santo is the fact that palo santo wood can be snuffed and relit, whereas, once sage begins to burn, it will often continue to burn completely. Regardless of what substance you choose, both sage and palo santo are time-tested and ancient tools for clearing space and releasing negative energy.

De-Stress Your Closet: Feng Shui Style

featured May 1 on Savor

When I tell my clients to de-clutter their closets, what I’m really saying is “create some space in your life.” Feng shui principles encourage us to peek into those dark closets to begin to shift the energy in our spaces. This releases stale, blocked energy and welcomes in new, vibrant life energy.

As we’re moving into the warmer weather months, this is a great time to de-clutter your closets. I have three feng shui tips to help you to make some space in your closet and consequently, your life.

Donate

If they haven’t seen daylight in the last three years, it’s time to donate the clothing, accessories or shoes. Pay special attention to the items that fall into the categories of “does not fit anymore” or “never worn before.” If it doesn’t fit you anymore, whether it’s too small or too big, you’re holding onto blocked energy.

This often translates to holding onto weight. If you really want to release weight, let go of some of the clothing that’s holding you back. Then there are those outfits that looked good on the rack but are still hanging in your closet with price tags. Let them go, too!

Crystals for your Holistic Space

Last week Rosie Stars of  Super 7 Healers shared the meanings and healing properties of crystals. This week we went room by room to place specific crystals and gemstones.

AC: Do you have gemstones located in your home, office or studio and why?

RS: Aside from the stones I wear I always have Smoky Quartz and Black Tourmaline where I sleep. Either on the night stand or next to my head as they work like psychic vacuums helping to protect and clear any negative energy I may have picked up during the day. I have used these stones to clear whole houses of negativity, so I feel everyone should have some!

Do you have gemstones that you would recommend for specifics areas, such as bedrooms (rest), desk (focus), living-entertaining spaces and why?

Absolutely! Stones can really help keep people feeling balanced and protected in various situations.

Bedrooms: Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Tourmalined Quartz. All should be next to the bed or headboard to aid sleep. And Rose Quartz is good to have at night as it calms the mind, releases worry, vibrationally supports the heart and helps us release emotional patterns that may be keeping us from reaching higher vibrations where we can experience higher energies and light. ALL of this while our bodies are sleeping!!! It gives our minds something to do instead of thinking/worrying!

Desk: Same as above to clear negativity, lower stress. Plus Amethyst is wonderful and similar to Sugilite in that it works with the higher chakras (6-14) but is cheaper and easier to find. If you do meetings or presentations find throat chakra stones: Larimar, Blue Lace Agate to help "speak your truth" or stand up for your self. If you are a lawyer or do any counseling where there is a lot of anger. Place a chunk of Tiger Eye in the room as it helps situations where people are at odds. It bridges extremes helping people get beyond concepts like right/wrong, good/bad bringing harmony to custody battles/divorce/hostile situations.

Living-Entertainment spaces: If you need a neutral space to decompress: green calcite (4th chakra/heart) for relaxation, emotional balance, release of stress. Wonderful for relationships and forgiveness, release of resentment.

If you want to bring joy and optimism to the space try green aventurine (4th chakra/heart) to bring hope and release attachments. It gently grounds and helps us move out of our heads and into our hearts...stimulates renewal on all levels.

If you have kids that are high energy or over active, use same stones as listed for bedrooms.

How would you recommend someone clear their gemstones, and why?

From a metaphysical perspective intention is enough to clear stones. You can focus the thought that you want to clear a stone of any energies that are not beneficial then blow on it or run it under water for a few seconds. It is more for our benefit that the "clearing" is done. I know there is a big deal made around clearing stones, but I find it is not the stone, but me who usually needs to be cleared. If a stone no longer feels like it is working for me I check in to see what I am feeling and then make sure it is the best stone for what I need to work on. I can always find a stone that then works.
