Q&A Sunday: A Yellow Rug for Health

I'm moving into a new place within a few weeks, and I've decided to dedicate the feng shui adjustments to Health, Knowledge and Abundance. I'm thinking of putting a yellow-toned, square rug in the center of my bedroom. Is it better to stay with a solid color, or can I use prints?

Michelle G., Phoenix, AZ

Hi Michelle,

Congratulations on your new place, and that’s wonderful that you are dedicating time and effort to put some feng shui adjustments into your new space! I take it you’re looking to adjust Health by placing a yellow-toned square rug in the center of your bedroom. This was a tip that I suggest in my book, 108 Ways to Create Holistic Spaces, and it’s a great way to tie things together in a room, visually and feng shui wise.

For your question, you need not stick to solids rugs; prints are fine. If you use square prints, that would reinforce the earth element. If you used triangular shapes, it would invoke the fire element which create earth.

Since the Health area is in the center, and it affects all the other feng shui areas, it is a great choice as an adjustment because it will also support the Knowledge and Abundance areas. If you cant find yellow, you can also use brown, beige, orange or other earthy tones.

Please send in a photo of what you ended up with!

Attract Love with Feng Shui

Feng shui is an ancient Asian art of placement that gives us guidelines for arranging our outer environments to reflect what we want to manifest in our lives. Many people are particularly interested in how they can use feng shui to attract some love. Here are three feng shui tips that you can carry out in your bedroom to let the universe know you are ready to meet that special someone. In fact, you can also use these tips to create more stability and harmony in any current relationship.

The Bed

If attracting a romantic partner is what you’re looking for, the first place to make feng shui adjustments is in the bedroom. In feng shui philosophy, the bedroom and bed represent you and also your future partner. First, be sure that you have at least a full size bed. A single bed tells the universe that there is no room for anyone else for you to share your life with.

Second is the bed location. You want the head or headboard of the bed pushed up securely up to the wall. Then, if possible make sure that there is room on both the left and right sides of the bed. In other words, it is ideal to set up the bed so that there is clear and balanced open space on both sides. If one person is more crammed in, it may represent an unbalanced dynamic in the relationship. One partner may feel more locked in or controlled. If the left or right side of your bed is pushed against a wall, this send the universe the message that the balance of energy between you and your future partner is not equal.

A Pair of Nightstands

Now that you have your bed situated so that there is equal space on left and right sides, make sure to have a nightstand on each side of the bed. The nightstands do not necessarily have to match or be exactly the same, but it is best if they are similar in size. It is even better if you can have similarly paired lamps for each nightstand. Pairs symbolize you and your future partner. When there is only one nightstand, you are expressing to the universe that you don’t really want to have a partner that you treat as an equal.

A Pair of Rose Quartz Stones

My final suggestion to further reinforce your desire to attract a partner is to activate the Relationship corner of your bedroom with a pair of rose quartz stones. If you stand in the doorway of your bedroom, facing into the room, the far back right corner is the Relationship area.

For this adjustment, place a pair of rose quartz stones in this area with the intention that one represents you and the other your future partner. Rose quartz heals the heart chakra, which encourages emotional healing. The pair of rose quartz pieces promotes trust and harmony with your future relationship.

I encourage each of you to implement these three simple feng shui tips to attract the love that you deserve in your life.

Q&A Sunday: What to Do When Your Desk Isn't In Command

I happily discovered your blog and am inspired to feng shui my desk! Unfortunately I have an L-Shaped desk attached to the walls, and the right side of my body is directly in line with the door. I do not have the option to change this, what can I do instead? Can I use crystals?

- Joanne C., San Francisco, CA

BTB feng shuiHi Joanne, thanks so much for your question. This is a good question, because it’s very common. If you work in a cubicle, or most office spaces, it’s very likely you will have a desk that is fastened to the walls, often placing the worker directly in line with the door (or door of the cubicle). I have designed many, many office spaces in my time, and even after learning feng shui, sometimes you end up with a situation like this. For instance, in my home office, my only option is also to place my desk so that my (left) side is directly in line with the door.

Luckily, BTB feng shui gives us some tools to adjust these situations. Ideally, if at all possible, it is best to place the desk in command. But for those of us without that option, I have some suggestions!

Convex Mirror

If the side of your body is facing the door, then you are not in command while sitting at your desk. A simple way to adjust this is to use a convex mirror. I have a small one on the top of my computer monitor so that it expands my view around me. It’s even better if you can place it angled so that you can see the door. You can get one at the Holistic Spaces store here.

Feng Shui Crystal Ball

Because you’re in line with the door, that puts you in the path of qi. This should be adjusted, because the qi comes at you very quickly and can be damaging. The feng shui way of adjusting for this is to place a faceted feng shui crystal ball halfway between you and the door. Grab a crystal ball with string at the Holistic Spaces store here. Hang the crystal ball with a red string from the ceiling. The length of the string can be cut in a dimension that is a multiple of 9, such as 9”, 18”, 27” and so forth. You can use any units, including centimeters. The crystal ball energetically breaks up that rushing qi and disperses it.

If you have enough room, you can use something else to break up the line of qi, such as a piece of furniture or plants. We’d love to see a photo of what you end up doing!
